Inspiring Joy: The PromoScience Expedition
Curiosity, education, and collaboration are all important traits in the pursuit of inspiring joy for the natural environment. As Manager for the School of Environment and Sustainability (and previous RRU recruiter), I had the pleasure of joining some of our faculty members, Dr. Audrey Dallimore, and an incredible group of scientists on The PromoScience Expedition that took place from October 18-21 along the west coast of BC. This engaging expedition was an innovative floating science project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and was an opportunity for students and community groups in Bamfield, Port Alberni, Tofino, and Ucluelet to meet scientists who work to characterize the coastal marine environment. The joint project between Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, Natural Resources Canada, and Royal Roads University aimed to stimulate curiosity about the marine environment and make visible the collaborative work happening along our coastline.
Throughout this trip, I had the pleasure of engaging with many students, teachers, change-makers, community members, and tourists in these areas who joined the scientists onboard to dive into the dynamic marine environment of our coastline (not literally of course)! From touching 12,500 year old sediment cores, discussing the chance of the “Big One”, or investigating the aquatic life of the ocean, there was no lack of information or equipment to explore! The conversation around the importance of education and career development within the environment and sustainability sector soon followed. “How do I build my career to do work like this?” or “How do I continue learning about these topics?” were questions that were routinely discussed with students and the community alike. What better place to have these discussions about educational opportunities than the beautiful outdoors?!
Perhaps the most memorable take away from this event was the thread of how everyone can play a part in sustaining our coastal communities – be it through raising awareness, challenging our own thoughts, or furthering our education or training within these meaningful fields.
